GRADE 4 -Recorder Ensemble and Learning Chimes

Hello Parents;

The Alberta Program of Studies indicates that students will "demonstrate skills on as many as possible" of instruments.  Currently, students are learning to play recorder, learning to "seal the holes" and play with a good tone, correctly using the tongue to articulate notes.  Through the process of playing recorder, they are also learning to read some notes on the staff, connecting them to the correct finger on the recorder-just like would be done if they were playing the piano.  In addition, students accompany the recorder on xylophones, practicing good mallet technique, playing harmony with the recorder melody and keeping together as a group.

We are also having a short unit using the hand-chimes, so that all grade 4 students will have an opportunity to play them.  In playing the chimes, students are practicing their tracking of a score and playing correct rhythms, plus making beautiful music.  We will also focus on understanding what a scale is: major and minor and be able to aurally identify the difference.

Please enjoy listening to what we are learning!
